IARU HF Champ.

A quick guide for operators — what to expect, what to say, and how it's scored.

This guide is a draft and hasn't been checked yet. Contest rules change from year to year — the sponsor's official rules are the final word.

What it is

The International Amateur Radio Union's world championship: 24 hours, CW and phone, with national society headquarters stations as extra prizes.

The exchange

Signal report and ITU zone: "59 2" (VE7 is in ITU zone 2). Society headquarters stations send their society's abbreviation instead, e.g. "59 RAC".

A typical contact

DA0HQ: "CQ contest, Delta Alpha Zero Hotel Quebec." You: "Victor Echo Seven Sierra Alpha Romeo." DA0HQ: "VE7SAR five nine DARC." You: "Thanks, five nine two."

Scoring

Points depend on distance: 1 point within our own ITU zone, more for other zones and continents. Multipliers are ITU zones and headquarters stations, counted per band.

Bands

160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 m, CW and phone.

Tips for first-timers

Headquarters stations (like DA0HQ or VE7RAC) are multipliers on every band and mode; look for them.
